Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Be sure to visit your dermatologist whenever you find strange discolorations or lesions when doing a monthly self-skin examination.

Surgical Dermatology

Dermatologic surgery is most commonly used when the skin is visibly damaged or disfigured. In addition to being used for cosmetic purposes, dermatologic surgery is used to treat various medical conditions, like removing malignant skin lesions. The primary treatment for skin cancer is usually surgery. Once melanoma has been diagnosed from a biopsy, the area of skin affected by cancer is removed using state-of-the-art surgical techniques.

While skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, it is also one of the easiest to treat. Most cases of skin cancer are diagnosed before the cancer has a chance to spread, meaning that removing the area could completely cure the disease for the patient. The surgery can sometimes leave a scar, but scar treatment is part of a surgical dermatologist’s field of expertise and they should be able to help you manage it.
