The 19th Annual Heart & Sole Race will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Salinas Valley Health (Salinas Valley Health) Campus in Salinas.

The Salinas Valley Health Heart and Sole relies on volunteers to help facilitate the community event. More than one hundred volunteers are needed in a variety of roles including registration, food tents, course safety, set up and clean up. All volunteers receive a commemorative shirt, refreshments and a letter of recognition.

“The Heart and Sole Race is a great way to build and promote healthy lifestyles,” says Margie Reyes, Salinas Valley Health Health Promotions Department. “We couldn’t do it without dedicated volunteers and we need more volunteers to help with this fun community event.”

Last year, more than 800 runners took part in Salinas Valley Health’s (Salinas Valley Health) annual 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk. All proceeds from Heart & Sole benefit Salinas Valley Health Medical Center Children’s Miracle Network.

There are a number of opportunities for runners and walkers of all ages, including a free tot trot and competitive 5K team event. Each 10K and 5K entrant receives a commemorative t-shirt, post-race refreshments, chip timing by Synergy Race Timing and is eligible to win prizes from local businesses. There is a one hundred dollar prize for top male and female athletes in the 5K and 10K races. The top three finishers in each age group in the 5K and 10K will receive a medal and all children under the age of 12 participating in Children’s Runs will receive custom “Just Run” medals.

Pre-registration for Heart & Sole is recommended. Adults pay $40.00 until May 13 and $45.00 after the pre-registration date. The fee for participants under the age of 17 is $20.00, the “Just Run” children’s races for ages 5-12 is $10.00 and toddlers ages 1-4 can join the Tot Trot for free.

Runners and walkers can pick up their Heart & Sole bibs and race packages on May 20th at the re-launch of the Salinas Valley Health Farmers’ Market www.svmh.com/farmersmarket. Runners and walkers can also register for Heart and Sole at the Farmers’ Market. The Salinas Valley Health Farmers’ Market is located at the corner of Wilgart Way and E. Romie Lane in Salinas every Friday from 1:30pm to 5:30pm. This is the fourth year Salinas Valley Health has supported a certified organic Farmers’ Market to promote the importance of eating healthy and as a way to increase easy access in the community to fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.

Anyone interested in walking, running or volunteering at the Heart & Sole Race can call Salinas Valley Health Health Promotion at 831-759-1890 or www.svmh.com/heartandsole
