Exceptional Patient Care is a Family Passion

SALINAS, CA - Some caregivers have a special way of making even the most difficult days a little brighter. At Salinas Valley Health, that gift comes naturally for Arnulfo “Arnie” Garcia, RN on the Observation Care Unit (OCU). Garcia received a DAISY Award this week in recognition of the compassion, kindness and humor he brings to his patients. His wife, Lola, and two of their three daughters joined his colleagues on the OCU to celebrate the recognition. Garcia’s career at Salinas Valley Health spans 20 years and prior to becoming a nurse, Garcia spent 12-years as a nurse assistant.

A patient’s heartfelt nomination captures the lasting impact of Garcia’s care – the patient wrote:

“Arnie, there are no words that can truly express how grateful I am for your kindness during my hospital stay. Your vibrant personality, your sense of humor brought out smiles and laughter in me when I needed them the most, lifting my spirit and making my days brighter. I will never forget how you made me feel, sharing your light, positivity to one of the most difficult moments of my life. Thank you for making me laugh! Que Dios te bendiga siempre. I will always treasure your kindness and the smiles you brought to my days.”

For Garcia, the award was both unexpected and deeply meaningful. “This is very amazing and incredible,” said Garcia, DAISY Award recipient. “I didn’t expect this, but am very proud and want to thank my family. This award reflects the way we care about patients at Salinas Valley Health and I'm going to continue doing the same thing. Not just for the moment, but keeping it up for the rest of my life.”

The celebration held a special meaning for the Garcia family. His wife, Lola, is also a nurse at Salinas Valley Health and a DAISY Award recipient, having received the honor while working at another hospital.

Every month Salinas Valley Health honors a nurse with a DAISY Award which recognizes nurses who deliver extraordinary and compassionate care or a STAR Award for all staff who exemplify the organization’s core values of Support, Teamwork, Accountability and Respect.
