Minimally Invasive Surgery with the da Vinci® 5 (dV5) Surgical Robot

The da Vinci® 5 (dV5) Surgical Robot is one of the newest advancements in robotic surgery. This state-of-the-art robotic system is outstanding in performing minimally invasive procedures. Its technology allows for a closer and more in-depth view for surgeons to perform at an optimal level, leading patients to a faster recovery. Salinas Valley Health Medical Center is proud to be the first in Monterey County to receive the dV5. The first procedure successfully completed with the new technology took place on December 23, 2024, by Dr. Tarun Bajaj.

Components of the da Vinci® 5 (dV5) include:

  • 43% less force on tissue through sensors detecting the push and pull force at the tip of the surgical instrument.
  • Sharper surgical imagery through 3D patient anatomy.
  • Increased hand and arm movement for surgeons. The dV5 allows surgeons to use their instruments in a way that is not possible without it, especially in confined spaces.

“Robotic-assisted surgery offers numerous benefits for patients, combining enhanced precision and surgical efficiency with significantly reduced trauma to the body. The minimally invasive approach results in smaller incisions, leading to less scarring, reduced blood loss, and lower risk of infections or need for transfusions. Patients typically experience less post-operative pain and enjoy shorter hospital stays, ultimately enabling them to recover more quickly and return to their daily activities sooner than with traditional surgical methods.” – Tarun Bajaj, MD
