Emergency Department Nurse Honored with DAISY Award

SALINAS, CA - A reassuring presence, clear communication and compassionate care helped earn Salinas Valley Health Emergency Department nurse Ashley Coronado, MSN, RN, CEN, the DAISY Award for Nursing Excellence.

Coronado was recognized after receiving a nomination from the daughter of a patient who brought her mother to the Emergency Department because of dangerously high blood pressure.

“We were so worried about her,” the family member wrote. “Ashley was our nurse and she was so kind. She assured us that we made the right decision to come and get checked out instead of making us feel silly. When we spoke, she gave us her full attention.”

The nomination praised Coronado for taking time to educate the family, explain procedures in language they could understand and ensure the patient felt respected throughout her visit.

“She treated my elderly mother with the dignity and care she deserves,” the nomination continued. “My whole family is very thankful for this positive ER experience.”

Coronado has been nominated for the DAISY Award four times during her six-and-a-half years at Salinas Valley Health. She began her nursing career at the organization caring for patients in the Heart Center before joining the Emergency Department.
