Salinas Valley Health Mark Velcoff, MD Asthma Camp Helps Kids Breathe Easier with Education and Adventure

SALINAS, Calif. — Nearly two dozen children from across Monterey County are spending this week building confidence, making new friends and learning how to better manage their asthma at the annual Salinas Valley Health Mark Velcoff, MD Asthma Camp.

The unique day camp provides children ages 6 to 12 with mild to severe asthma the opportunity to experience the fun of summer camp in a safe, medically supervised environment. The program is made possible through the support of Salinas Valley Health, Salinas Valley Health Foundation and Children's Miracle Network.

Throughout the week, campers participate in traditional summer activities including swimming, hiking, soccer, pickle ball and the ever-popular Camp Olympics while also learning practical skills to help them successfully manage their asthma. Educational sessions focus on understanding asthma triggers, proper medication use, breathing techniques and strategies that help children stay active and healthy.

"Asthma shouldn't keep children from enjoying the activities they love," said Dr. Steven Prager, Asthma Camp Medical Director. "Our goal is to help every camper better understand their condition while building the confidence and skills they need to live active, healthy lives. Just as importantly, they discover they're not alone and make friendships with other children who share similar experiences."

Salinas Valley Health respiratory therapists, healthcare professionals and trained volunteers join forces to make the annual event possible in an engaging and supportive environment.

In addition to outdoor adventures, campers enjoy special presentations and activities designed to make learning memorable. The week concludes Friday July 24 with pickle ball, Camp Olympics, a family lunch and a graduation ceremony with awards.

The Mark Velcoff, MD Asthma Camp is one of many community outreach programs offered by Salinas Valley Health to improve the health and well-being of children and families throughout Monterey County.
