Expanding Excellence in Nursing
Salinas Valley Health and Hartnell College, 20+ Year Partnership
Growing Our Own—From Classroom to Community Care
The expansion of a 20+ year partnership between Salinas Valley Health and Hartnell College addresses critical nursing shortages and strengthens the region’s healthcare workforce.
Announced on National Nurses Day (May 6, 2026), Salinas Valley Health’s three-year, $1.5 million investment will enhance Hartnell’s respected program and continue a strong clinical collaboration that gives students hands-on experience in real care settings.
Building a Stronger Pipeline
This investment will increase student capacity by 50%—from 50 to 75—creating a direct pathway from education to employment within the Salinas Valley.
By supporting regional talent, this collaboration:
- Expands access to training
- Creates clear career pathways
- Reinforces the healthcare workforce
- Enhances access to quality care across the region
Investing in People, Not Just Numbers
“As a nurse and a leader, I have seen firsthand the profound impact that education and opportunity can have—not only on individual careers, but on entire communities,” said Carla Spencer, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at Salinas Valley Health.
“This effort goes beyond increasing enrollment—it prepares the next generation of compassionate, highly skilled professionals who will serve our region. By supporting local talent, we are investing in our shared future.”
A Partnership Rooted in History
This collaboration dates back to 1954, when Hartnell’s first vocational students trained at Salinas Valley Health. Since then, thousands have gained hands-on clinical experience—opportunities that continued even during the most challenging stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The partnership has also supported major advancements in training, including the development of Hartnell’s Center for Nursing and Health Sciences.
Preparing for the Future
Equipped with advanced classrooms, simulation labs, and skills training environments, the Center prepares students to deliver high-quality, compassionate care in a diverse and evolving region.
Together, Salinas Valley Health and Hartnell College are meeting workforce needs—while helping build a stronger, healthier future for the Salinas Valley.
