March 25, 2026, SALINAS, CA - Salinas Valley Health Medical Center has once again earned national recognition for nursing excellence, this time reaching an even higher milestone. The organization has achieved Magnet Recognition with Distinction™ from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), an elite designation awarded to only 1% of hospitals nationwide.
The designation is a reflection of the combined and coordinated efforts of nurses, leaders, physicians and staff across all departments to achieve exceptional success in patient care. The integrated approach to the comprehensive care model and Magnet with Distinction from ANCC further elevates the impressive reputation Salinas Valley Health has achieved for safety, quality and patient care.
Magnet Recognition with Distinction™ follows an extensive and highly competitive evaluation process. We submitted over two thousand pages of detailed documentation demonstrating excellence in nursing leadership, patient outcomes, innovation and professional practice. The process culminated in a rigorous, multi-day site visit in mid-January, where appraisers conducted in-depth evaluations and interacted with over 400 staff across the organization.
“This recognition reflects the extraordinary commitment of our nursing teams and the culture of excellence we have built and sustained,” said Carla Spencer, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at Salinas Valley Health. “To achieve Magnet with Distinction is an incredible honor and a validation of the professionalism, collaboration and compassion we provide to every patient, every day.”
The Magnet Recognition Program, administered by ANCC evaluates organizations against the most rigorous standards in nursing. The achievement puts Salinas Valley Health Medical Center in a select global community of Magnet-recognized organizations, and an even smaller group that has reached the distinction level, underscoring the organization’s leadership in advancing patient care across all levels of the healthcare system.
“Achieving Magnet Recognition with Distinction is a powerful affirmation of who we are as an organization,” said Allen Radner, MD, President/CEO of Salinas Valley Health. “It speaks to the unwavering dedication of our entire staff, serving in both clinical and non-clinical roles. Our collective strength is the teamwork and intent focus we share to providing the highest level of care to the communities we serve.”
The announcement came Wednesday during a staff gathering and live video conference call with the Chair of the Commission on Magnet Recognition. While staff was hopeful, the extent of the announcement was not known in advance. Following the news, a congratulatory celebration took place on campus.
Research consistently shows that Magnet-recognized organizations deliver better outcomes for patients and reflects a highly engaged staff. These organizations report higher patient satisfaction, lower mortality rates, stronger employee engagement, and greater workforce stability, all key indicators of a high-performing health system.
Salinas Valley Health Medical Center first earned ANCC Magnet recognition in 2021 after a five-year long documentation and application process. Magnet recognition is widely regarded as the gold standard for nursing excellence and is a factor considered by U.S. News & World Report in its annual rankings of America’s best hospitals.
