Captivating Student Art Initiative at Salinas Valley Health

Captivating Student Art Initiative at Salinas Valley Health

Salinas, CA - Salinas Valley Health is opening its doors to a new kind of healing environment, where art created by talented local students now lines the walls of the Medical Center.

Dozens gathered for an artist reception celebrating the launch of a student art initiative led by Dr. Allen Radner, Salinas Valley Health President/CEO. The project brings original works from students at California State University, Monterey Bay, Hartnell College and Rancho Cielo into the hospital, transforming previously blank corridors into spaces that reflect the community’s identity, creativity and lived experiences.

“Fundamentally, we had little art. We had a hospital full of empty corridors, which was nice and clean, but it wasn’t engaging,” said Dr. Radner. “I saw an opportunity to make our Medical Center more inviting and interesting. I wanted to do something that was high quality and local, to acknowledge people in this community for their talent and support their programs. When you look at the walls now, it’s really astounding.”

The initiative was designed with intention. Leaders at Salinas Valley Health identified spaces to enhance the care environment not only for patients and their families, but also for staff who have carried the weight of caring for the community through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Art has the ability to be reflective, uplifting and joyful,” Dr. Radner said. “We believed bringing it into the hospital would add real value for people during some of the most difficult moments in their lives.”

The collection features about two dozen artist works, each offering a unique perspective. Some pieces are deeply personal. Others explore broader social themes or capture moments of joy. Together, they create a visual narrative that mirrors the diversity and rich character of the region.

“The art tells a story of our community,” said ICU nurse Dana Rodgers, who served on the selection committee. “The students’ work doesn’t just come from technique. It reflects their lived experience and is quite beautiful and in some cases profound. It was very special to be part of the process.”

For the student artists, the opportunity extends beyond exhibition. It is a chance to connect their work to a setting centered on healing.

“I was raised in an immigrant family and am a proud of my heritage.” said CSUMB student artist Dayanara Silva. “The tapestry of my life is part of how I present my art. I am so grateful to Salinas Valley Health for giving me a place and space to display my talent. It is encouraging and inspiring to see my work alongside other local artists and to know we are connecting with people in a healing environment.”

The initiative was developed in partnership with faculty and program leaders from participating schools, including Angelica Muro, Reid Psaltis, Marianne Fontes, Chris Devers and Karina Carrasco. Members of the Salinas Valley Health selection committee included ICU nurse Dana Rodgers, community member Katie Gibson and Dr. Dawn Mudge.

Organizers describe the effort as a pilot program that has already exceeded expectations. While the current installation fills portions of the hospital, many walls remain open, offering space for future student contributions as the program continues to grow.
