SALINAS, Calif. – Salinas Valley Health has presented a STAR Award to longtime Environmental Services team member Reuben Tayan, whose work exemplifies the organization’s deeply rooted culture of patient safety.
Tayan has been part of Salinas Valley Health for more than a quarter of a century, bringing the organization’s STAR values of Support, Teamwork, Accountability and Respect, to his work day after day, year after year.
The two nominations submitted on his behalf reflect a culture of safety in which staff across every department recognize that each individual in a healthcare setting is accountable for clinical excellence. Environmental Services is foundational to infection prevention, cleanliness and procedural readiness throughout the organization.
The words of praise for Tayan’s attention to detail and work ethic came from a physician and nurse in the cath lab who depend on precise, timely room preparation and a sterile environment.
“Reuben consistently demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, adherence to infection control protocols, and professionalism in maintaining a clean and safe environment,” wrote Christine Lozada-Salazar, BSN, RN. “He plays a critical role in supporting patient safety and ensuring procedural areas are ready for each case. His reliability, efficiency and teamwork are deeply appreciated by staff.”
Rikin Kadakia, MD, echoed that sentiment, noting Tayan’s impact on patient outcomes and commitment to the clinical team.
“He is hands-on, attentive and always available to help,” wrote Dr. Kadakia. “Reuben responds to requests urgently, without complaint and with a positive demeanor. He routinely goes the extra mile without being asked, demonstrating professionalism and pride in his work every day.”
After more than 26 years on the job, Tayan continues to refine his skills and elevate his performance, demonstrating that longevity and growth can go hand in hand.
“I was very surprised,” Tayan said at the STAR Award ceremony. “I am happy to be working here for so long. I always do my best.”
In addition to Tayan, the other STAR Award nominees this period are: Daniel Barnes, RDCS, AE, PE, RVT, Lead Cardiac Sonographer, Cardiology; Rafaella Esparza-Ramos, Nurse Aide, Med Surg; Renee Johnson, SHRM-CP, Specialist, Human Resources; Sadie Lopez, Concierge/Guest Services Member Liaison; Armida Mina, Nurse Aide, Observation Care Unit; Shae Moreland, CPT, Lab Technician Assistant I, Laboratory; Jennifer Ordaz-Calderon, Department Coordinator, Pharmacy; and Kyle Siler, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist-Emergency Department, Pharmacy.

The DAISY Award is an international program that honors nurses for extraordinary compassion, clinical skill and personalized care, established by The DAISY Foundation. The STAR Award is a recognition program created by Salinas Valley Health to honor non-nursing staff exemplifying the organizations core values of Support, Teamwork, Accountability and Respect.
